Fiercely Competitive Scramble Opens the 2007 Season
|
Well, we're off to a good start. The weather was dry (but a little cold) and the scramble teams
brought their competitive spirit to Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Seven of the nine teams
finished within 3 strokes of the lead and the spread from first to last was only 7. In looking at the
scores, it's easy to see that the par fives, with the exception of 9, were the birdie holes and only 3
birdies were made over the tough final 3 holes.
The winning team was the foursome of Ben and Eddie Santamaria, Joe Buenavista and Larry Lind
with a score of 5 under par 67. The first seven teams all shot 34 on the front nine so it was going
to take a good back nine to pull this one out and these guys shot 33. Birdies at 10, 11, 15 & 16
enabled them to absorb the bogey at 17 and still take the title. A three-way tie for second, broken
by tiebreaker, produced the second place team of Mark O'Reilly, Alex Roosakos, Peter Roosakos
and Tony Abdilla with a 4-under 68. With a group of long hitters, this team produced the only bogey
on a par five all day which was disappointing and kept them from a first place tie. Both of the other
teams tieing for second bogeyed the difficult 17th hole. With a break or two, here and there, we
could have had a 4-way tie for first.
Let's hope our first official event at Crystal Springs, dodges the rain this year!
