Thierry Dubois shot 37 on the front nine for a net 30 with his 7 front nine strokes. The
team score on the front was also 30 which led to the question, "Where's Bill"?
Well, Bill made his presence known with a net eagle on the 10th and proceeded to
follow that up with net birdies on 12, 14, 15 & 16. A back nine 29 brought them in with
a team 59. Thierry shot a 77, net 63, which was a phenomenal score for a windy day at
Metropolitan Golf Links. Bill made a nice comeback with a 42 on the back.
The second place team of Marty and Chris Miguel thought they had a good chance
as they went out in 8 under par 28, which included four straight net 2's on holes 4-7.
Unfortuantely, the backside was less than inspired as they limped home with a 1 under 35.
Both players had a number of bad holes but didn't seem to have the same bad hole. For
example, Chris made a net 4 on the par 4 14th hole while Marty made an 11. His only
comment about that hole was, "Hey, I made a 15 footer to save that 11!".
Steve Clark and Victor Tablante were third with a 64. Their card was typical of so
many others on this day. Net scores above their handicaps, a few pars on both cards, a
high number here and there, etc. etc. After a front nine of 30, they just couldn't get it going
on the back with a 34.
For the most part, the scores were high as the blustery wind made things difficult.
That makes Theirry Dubois' 77 that much better. Another guy not phased by the conditions
was Bruce Bartfeld. Bruce plays a lot of golf over at Half Moon Bay so I'm sure the
conditions at Metropolitan were like a beautiful Spring day! Bruce shot an 80 with a 37 on
the back that included birdies at 13 & 17. The only other score under 90 was an 86 by Dan
Haynosch. Sorry Dan Sr. I know you were hoping I wouldn't clarify which Dan it was but in
the spirit of journalistic integrity I must report that it was Dan Jr. One final note. It was great
to see long time Westdivot Lloyd Sakakihara at his event. Lloyd was up from the San Diego
area and hasn't changed a bit!!
