Tiebreakers abound at the 2009 Scramble
|
Three teams tied for first at our season opening
scramble at Los Lagos Golf Course in San Jose.
This is a new course for us and proved to be an
interesting venue for the scramble. The cart
snafu aside, I think the course was enjoyable. Winning
all the tiebreakers to win this years scramble was the
team of Ben Santamaria, Peter Roosakos, Tony Abdilla
and Bryan DeRose with a score of 9 under par 59. I
knew this would be a good team (they received no
handicap strokes) but I didn't think they would birdie
half of the holes!!! Being a par 68 course, I thought
the par 4's and 5's would be the key to this round as
the par 3's would be the equalizer. Well, this team
birdied all five par-5's which was the key to their win.

In second place was the team of Jim and Jeremy
Hardy, Taka Kitagawa and Sid Grant (61-2=59).
This team managed only one birdie on a par-5
but did card four birdies on the par-3's. Sid's
putter was working as he ran in 3 or 4 long putts.
The third team with a 59 (61-2=59) was the team
of Larry Lind, Joe Buenavista, Jim Gustafson and
Angelo Matheou. They were also 5 under par on
the par-5's but that was with a par at 18 and an
eagle at the ninth. After a birdie at the 10th they
were 7-under for the day but unfortunately they
finished with 8 straight pars.
Our first attempt at the new "Jackpot Hole" provided no winner as the
"Feet to Beat" dice roll produced a 5. Jim Gustafson came close
with a shot to 7'-5". The $17.50 from Los Lagos will roll over to Stone
Tree where the par-3 17th will be our next Jackpot Hole worth
approximately $31.00.
