You couldn't have asked for better weather as a small field tackled Crystal
Springs in September. Ben Santamaria and Mark O'Reilly took advantage of the
great conditions and shot a team 60 for first place. Ben shot an 81 which is an
excellent score on the uneven lies of Crystal. He used only 29 putts for his 40-41
round. Mark shot a 95 which was a little inflated by a disastrous 18th hole. I don't
have the details but it couldn't have been pretty! In second place were Larry Lind
and Ken Rachko with a 61. When you finish 1 shot out of the lead you can always
go back and find a hole that you could have played better. Well, we don't have to
look farther than the 18th as both Ken and Larry made double bogey for net 5's.
Both players were off their games but managed to pick each other up when
needed. Ken made a nice birdie on the par-5, 4th hole and followed it up with a par,
net eagle on the difficult par-4 5th. Jim Gustafson and Angelo Matheou were third
with a 63. Putting seemed to be the issue for this team taking 82 between them
including 12, 3-putts and a 4 putt.
Crystal Springs is one of those courses that can bite you at any time and
produce huge numbers. We don't need to look much further than the card of the
next team, Bill Beyer and Thierry Dubois. Bill had a double digit score on each
nine and Thierry took a combined 17 strokes on two par 4's on the front. I know
they'll love that I mentioned those stats! Their team 66 had them in 4th place. The
scores on this day were unusually high (even for us)! The best round of the day,
which was the 81 by Ben Santamaria, was 12 shots clear of the next best score (93
by Thierry Dubois). So, having said that........guess there's not much left to talk
about.............is there?
The Jackpot Hole has reached triple digits at $100.00. If it's not won at
Hiddenbrooke, we'll have another 3 dice roll at Santa Clara to see if we can get a
winner. If not, the jackpot carries over to next season.
