If any of you read the information on the Aptos Seascape website you'll know that
the course was built in 1926 as Rio Del Mar Country Club. The course took a
sabbatical during World War II and was used as a victory garden to support the war
effort. Hence, the title of this story. Are you still with me?
Jack Hiler and Alex Barna played the final five holes at Seascape in 4 under par to
charge into the lead and take top honors with a team 61. Both players contributed
as Jack shot 103 (net 79) while Alex added 102 (net 72). Alex had a net birdie on the
difficult par-3 6th hole and followed that with a net eagle on the par-4 7th. Jack had a
net birdie on the long uphill par-3 14th hole and finished with a net birdie at 18. In
second place was the team of Marty and Brian Miguel with a 62. Brian carried the
front nine with a 43 that included two net eagles and three net birdies. Marty tied for
low round of the day with an 85 but being in the green side bunker on 18 in two and
winding up with a 7 was a disappointing finish. I think he uncovered a WWII vintage
potato trying to get out of that bunker!
Bill Beyer and Thierry Dubois were third with a team 63. Thierry shot an 86 and Bill
had a couple of tough holes that ballooned his score. Both of these guys had a
rough day of putting as they both came in with 40 putts. Actually it seemed to be a
difficult day on the green for a lot of the group as half of the filed had 38 putts or
more with 6 rounds in the 40's.
Other nice rounds were shot by Bruce Bartfeld with 85 and Joe Buenavista's 89. No
one won the jackpot hole so we'll carry over the $44 to our next event.
