Only 6 shots separate 1st from last at the 2010 Scramble
|
With a threatening sky looming over head most of the day, the 2010 Scramble was another
close one going right down to the wire. With a spread of 6 shots from 1st to last it was
anyone's game. The team of Jim Suekama, Gary Sakamoto, Steve Clark and Matt
Mayberry got off to a hot start with a 5 under par front nine fueled by the play of new
member Matt. An even par back nine for a 65 (net 61) was enough to win as other teams
couldn't muster enough of a rally to catch them. It was apparent that you needed to make
your birdies on the front nine as the backside just wouldn't surrender them.
The second place team of Brian Lee, Peter Vorametsanti, Joel Patterson and Larry Lind
made a lot of pars on the day but just couldn't get enough birdie opportunities. Their net 62
included pars on all three of Poplar Creek's par 5's. Most of the field made one or two
birdies on these holes. In third place were three teams tied at net 63. All three of these
teams just couldn't get a putt to drop as they parred the final four holes. A few bogeys
mixed in along the way and these teams had an uphill fight to get back into contention.
A couple of notable performances on the day included Matt Mayberry's solo birdie on the
par-4 second hole. His team used his drive, his approach and he holed the putt. This is the
number one handicap hole and is a very difficult hole to face so early in the round. The other
was a solo eagle by Jason Beyer (Bill's son) on the 259 yd. par-4 7th hole. Jason's tee
shot drew around the corner and landed 20 feet from the hole. Putting first, Jason calmly
stroked the ball dead center for eagle. Nice going guys!!
